An architect is an interesting and prestigious profession that gives a person the opportunity for creative self–expression. The greatest and most famous architects have left their mark on history with their unique style. The heyday of the profession occurred in the XV-XVI century, when the Renaissance period began in Europe. At that time, architects were called builders. Initially, they were engaged in the construction of separate facilities. Then, with the advent of cities, they began to plan urban space in such a way that each object formed a single ensemble with others.

Translated from Greek, «architect» means «chief builder». It forms the surrounding space and depends on it how the structure will look, how it will harmonize with the surrounding architecture, how unique and original it will be.

The peculiarity of the architect's profession is that in order to realize creative ideas, it is necessary to involve other specialists – engineers, designers, economists. Therefore, in addition to free creative expression, the profession also combines engineering precision and effective management.

What is the job of an architect?

The architect is the author of the idea of the building, which he then embodies in the project and visualizes in the form of a layout. He thinks over every detail of the object under construction and, with the help of other specialists, implements them in drawings and diagrams. It is important here that the building is not only attractive inside and out, but also ensures the comfort of its operation with convenient entrances, exits, a sufficient amount of internal space and lighting, modern engineering systems.

Stages of the architect's work:

  • Creating a sketch of the structure.
  • Detailed development of the layout, facades and their coordination with the customer.
  • Creation of an architectural project with floor plans and explications of premises, a section of the house, building facades in axes, linking the project to the cadastral plan of the site, etc.

The main part of the architect's work ends here, but work on the project continues, in which he also takes part. On the basis of the architectural project, construction drawings and the engineering part of the project are developed, therefore, it should be possible to implement the selected solutions. To do this, the architect needs to know the basics of construction engineering and construction technologies. With the start of construction work, the architect's work may consist in the author's supervision of the construction process, for the most complete and accurate implementation of the project created by him.

Specializations of architects

Due to the complexity of the work, architects specialize in different areas – urban planning, landscape architecture, architectural design, as well as restoration of architectural monuments.

Architects work in private and public construction organizations, design organizations and design studios, in government agencies that regulate urban planning processes.

Features of choosing a profession

The profession of an architect is closely connected with creativity, so you need to be able to generate ideas, apply creative approaches and create unique products. This line of work is suitable for people with developed spatial thinking who are able to work with large amounts of data.

The specialist must have a specialized education, know design programs, be able to draw up and read project documentation, know the features and technologies of using building materials.

The most important advantage of the profession is the opportunity to see and evaluate the results of their work. It is architects who change the lives of many people for the better by designing «smart» energy-efficient houses or constructing buildings using «green» technologies.

The development of information technologies has made it possible to automate many project creation processes. Today, with the help of computer programs, you can perform a large number of drawings, as well as conduct virtual tests of selected solutions. Automation speeds up the process and guarantees high quality calculations.

But one thing is for sure in the near future, machines are unlikely to be able to completely replace the creative work of an architect, so the profession will still be in demand.
